BARAT Scholarships

Starting Fall 2006, the Barat Education Foundation will provide up to 10 Barat Scholarships annually with a maximum of $5,000 each. Preference will be given to Barat College alumni, their children or grandchildren, and to graduates of Sacred Heart Schools in Illinois, including Woodlands Academy, Josephinum, and Sheridan Road. Discussions are underway with a number of Catholic Universities in the Chicago area to support the Barat Scholars.

Tuition increases have outpaced the limit of available federal financial aid.  For the continuing education of our alumni, their children, and their granchildren, financial aid could very well determine whether a college or postgraduate education is obtainable.

As the custodian of the Barat Endowment, the Barat Education Foundation is committed to making a difference for students in need of scholarship support. It is a significant part of Barat's legacy to make education available and affordable to students of all ages.

Barat Scholars Update - October 2006:

The Barat Education Foundation is preserving the Barat college educational legacy through an innovative Barat Scholars Program. The purpose of the Barat Scholars Program is to support and cultivate the leaders of the next generation. Presently we (BEF) have partnered with three educational entities.

1.  Dominican University: The Barat Scholars at Dominican University will participate in a higher education program, which will address the issue of developing the next generation of female leaders.  The goal of the program will be to provide students with an academic experience that will enhance their critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills.

Barat Scholars Scholarships will be available to both students seeking an undergraduate or postgraduate degree that are interested in pursuing the liberal arts and sciences, teacher education and/ or business. In addition to their degreed program, the Barat Scholar will be required to take four core courses in leadership studies. Students chosen, as Barat Scholars will be given individual and professional support throughout their years of study at Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois

Barat Scholars will be required to participate during the award period (time) in professional development, mentoring, and internship programs in community service and/or not-for-profit social justice programs offered at Dominican.

2. Barat Scholars Program At OCICU: A Network of National and International Colleges and Universities (Managed by New Ventures of REGIS UNIVERSTIY).   We are preserving the Barat college educational legacy through an innovative Barat Scholars program, which is being designated for deserving Adult students seeking either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.  Barat Scholars Scholarships will be available to Adult students seeking degrees (either undergraduate or postgraduate) online thru OCICU.

Avery, Jr., which is being designated for deserving students seeking a postgraduate degree at DePaul University. Barat Scholars Scholarships in memory of Gerald A. Avery, Jr. will be available to students seeking postgraduate degrees for example in education, public policy, business, accounting and/or law.

Scholarship Program Details:

For all of the above three institutions priority will be given to Barat College alumni and/or their children (or grandchildren) as well as graduates of Sacred Heart Schools who demonstrate financial need and merit.

The Barat Scholars grant recipients will be students who through their faith, leadership and community service have demonstrated a commitment to discovering and expanding their knowledge, and to critiquing and transforming society in the same spirit and courage that resonated in the life work of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and the Religious of the Sacred Heart.
