Barat Center for Educational Ventures

"The world changes and we must change with it."
-St. Madeleine Sophie Barat

Continuing the Heritage and Legacy of Barat College is simply not enough.  Our founder clearly challenged us to carry the mission forward, making education successful amidst the practical realities of today’s world.  We must change, we must help others to change, and we must support educational ventures that will create a better future.

According to a 2000 Kellogg Commission Report Returning to our Roots:

The biggest education challenges we face revolve around character, conscience, tolerance, civility, citizenship and individual and social responsibility.  We dare not ignore this obligation in a society that sometimes gives the impression that values such as these are discretionary.  These should be part of the standard equipment of our graduates, not options.

The Center for Educational Ventures supports research and development in effective engagement and education for today’s underserved youth.  Our programs educate teachers and students around ethics, citizenship, and individual and social responsibility.  With the help of our alumni, friends, Senators Durbin and Link, we have gained great momentum in connecting students with the past, present and future of our great American democracy.

  • American Memory Initiative – Learning history and critical thinking with primary sources from the Library of Congress
  • Cicero – The Interactive History and Civics Platform
  • Citizenship – Classroom programs foster citizen leadership in middle school students
