The Religious of the Sacred Heart
In the aftermath of the French Revolution, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat recognized the need to open the doors of education to young women and the disadvantaged. Joined by a number of courageous women, she founded the Society of the Sacred Heart, and opened schools in France and later the United States.
Barat College of the Sacred Heart continued Madeleine Sophie Barat's legacy in the 20th Century by opening the door of higher education to a diverse community of students. Barat College developed the Learning Opportunities Program, a nationally recognized program for learning disabled students, Upward Bound for underserved minority students, and an Adult Reentry program for women.
The Foundation and the Sacred Heart Legacy
Today, the Barat Education Foundation is committed to continuing and adapting St. Madeleine Sophie Barat's legacy and vision to our 21st century world. We are providing educational opportunities to women and men across the country who want to be teachers. We are awarding scholarships to students who are financially unable to pursue an education at a Catholic college or university. We are supporting our retired RSCJ in their time of financial need.
